Irish Hand Crochet “Legacy” Christening Gown 100% Cotton
This Christening gown has been beautifully hand crocheted in thicker cotton yarn with simplicity and style. The bodice is crocheted in a mesh like stitch to form open spaces with a satin ribbon ties at the front. Just as our mothers and grandmothers created pieces which resembled the countryside around them this gown has been hand crocheted with clusters running throughout reminiscent of the rugged landscape of Donegal. A very special garment for a most special occasion.
Non Allergic. Hand crafted in Donegal.
THE HISTORY OF CROCHET IN IRELAND
This beautiful craft was introduced as a famine relief scheme in the mid nineteenth century and within a few years it was being taught all over the country. Women and children became very skilled at their work and supplied markets in Dublin, London, Paris, Rome and New York. Crochet was a way of supplementing the family income and may even have earned a ticket to a new life in the United States of America.
